This paper presents the stories of Hulan and Ariunaa: two women from Ulaanbaatar who exemplifies two virtually opposite ways of responding to and dealing with the postsocialist world of radical transition. The quintessential “urban hunter”, Hulan, constantly explores (and annihilates) new relations and possibilities. As an inherently erratic hunter of quick profit, she is repulsed by ordinary salaried and contracted jobs in which the almost erotic thrills, excitements and surprises of urban hunting are totally absent. She, like many others from her generation, is steering a capricious course whereby the whole trick is to know one’s “size” in order to optimally balance the tightrope of transition. Ariunaa, on the other hand, is fundamentally averse to performing this balancing act and to the entire life and world that comes with it. Accordingly, for her the only solution is to detach herself from transition altogether—from changers, hustlers, shamans and troublesome relations more generally—in the hope of carving out an insular social and existential space that is clinically detached from, and thus unaffected (and uninfested) by the always changing realities and potentialities of the postsocialist city. Far from fearlessly taking a dive into the violently shifting seas of transition like the extrovert Hulan, Ariunaa opts for a more introverted religiosity capable of keeping impinging networks of human and nonhuman “evil” at bay through a commitment to a single Christian God.
